If you're already comfortable with the basics of French and want to develop your vocabulary and understanding of grammar further, this intermediate course from the Coffee Break Academy is for you.

An outline of the course

Coffee Break French Level 3 focuses on language development through a fictional story involving three characters who happen to be learning French in a language school in Nice on the Côte d'Azur. There's Katie, an American student who is currently spending a year travelling, working and learning in different European countries; Veronica is a forty-something Australian entrepreneur who is taking advantage of an extended business trip to the south of France to improve her language skills; and Alf, a retired teacher from the Home Counties.

As part of their weekly homework, our three characters have to keep a diary of their time spent in France, so over the forty lessons of the course you'll be following their adventures in Nice and the surrounding area. In each episode you'll listen to a native speaker read Katie, Veronica or Alf's diary entry (which, of course, has been corrected by Mme Soulabaille, their teacher!) and your teacher, Mark, will talk about some of the language covered in the passages.

The language used in the diary entries provides you with many opportunities to build your own understanding, increase your vocabulary and become familiar with complex grammatical structures.

Each lesson contains:

Main audio episode

The diary entries of Katie, Veronica and Alf are presented and Mark talks through one or two of the main language points included. This main audio episode is the best way to introduce yourself to the featured text: it's read slowly, and Mark mentions one or two aspects of the language, helping you understand the content.

Language Study audio episode

Once you've listened to the main episode and had your first taste of the diary entry, you can study the text in more depth by using our Language Study episode. In this episode, Mark analyses the whole text, explaining all aspects of the grammar and vocabulary used. In addition, further examples are provided and your understanding will be tested with some translations. The Language Study episode also includes a version of the diary entry read at a normal speaking speed, helping you to increase your ability to understand authentic French.

Lesson notes

We've provided a full transcript of all the texts and explanations of the grammar covered in each text. There are additional examples of the phrases and expressions and a special focus on particular grammar points which come up in the texts. The lesson notes will help you make more solid progress with your learning.

There are several aspects of the members' version that I find extremely useful. Reinforcing the grammar within the context of the narrative further clarifies the earlier lessons in Level 2. Repeating the narrative several times means that I was able to concentrate on the portions that were not clear the first time they were presented. Using different male and female speakers and slightly different accents helps me further enhance my listening skills. Having the lesson notes also provides another visual reinforcement of the lesson.
